VIEWING ROUTE / 05

THE ARTIST / THE WORK / THE CONTEXT

Illustration & original ideas

Follow the development of an idea, with room for attribution, interpretation and a considered brief.

05

An illustrative direction can begin with a drawing, a visual theme or a question about the artist’s own work. This route is an editorial viewing aid. It does not commission a design, grant permission to reproduce references or establish that a portfolio belongs to a verified directory member.

01

Name the point of departure

Explain the idea or portfolio example that interests you. Distinguish an original drawing from a reference or collaborative contribution. An individual artist should be credited for the work they actually made, even when it is published by a studio, event or shared account.

02

Respect the original contribution

References can help communicate, but publication does not make a design free to copy. Identify sources and ask about the creator’s own design discussion. Do not claim another person’s work as yours or circulate a client image without the appropriate permission.

03

Give the conversation its context

State what you would like to ask and the practical location or timing relevant to a discussion. Confirm the current responsible contact and any actual design, consultation or change terms before committing. The directory does not book appointments, verify competence or promise access to an artist.

TAKE A CLEARER QUESTION WITH YOU

A question worth
asking the creator.

These prompts organise an enquiry. They do not assess competence, establish availability or confirm a commission.

  1. What is my idea, and what is someone else’s reference?
  2. Who should be credited for the work?
  3. Which part of the design conversation needs clarification?
